Yoga Schmoga

My sister recently called me to let me know she took part in her first yoga class...and didn't like it one bit. Well, I explained to her, yoga is not 'one size fits all.' The style of the yoga class and the style of the teacher determine the experience you will have and the results you will achieve. For my sister - who is looking for a muscle-building, sweat-inducing workout - a gentle Kundalini session brings her more frustration than enlightenment. I asked her to try an Ashtanga session or Pilates before giving up on mind-body fitness completely. We'll see what she reports back.

Our bodies are designed to get the workout they need from our routine daily activity. Once upon a time, that was the case, but as a by-product of today's modern conveniences and lifestyle most of us are only able to exercise in concentrated bursts. That makes it all the more important that we enjoy those bursts of energy, rather than look upon them with dread like so many other chores on our to-do lists.

So tailor your fitness regimen to your personality, in addition to your goals and physical condition. Take some time to evaluate various workouts by attending introductory sessions (often offered free or at a reduced price), reading books or researching online to help you make a commitment to your body and mind that you enjoy upholding.
